Sri Lanka's national flower was declared at the same time as its national tree, the Ceylon ironwood ( Mesua ferrea ), in February 1986. But the selection committee omitted to include an image of the flower in its report, describing it only as Nymphaea stellata, a pale blue water lily.

On 26th February in 1986, a Cabinet Paper presented under the patronage of Mr. K.H.J. Wijayadasa named the Blue Lily as the National Flower of Sri Lanka. Back in 2016, the national flower was officially announced as the Water Lily, more commonly known as the Manel Flower and not just the Blue Manel.
