Rainbow Beach with the famous Coloured Sands
Dubbed as the "gateway to Fraser Island", Rainbow Beach, a tiny town at the base of the Inskip Peninsula, is situated on the Queensland south east coast, north of Noosa and is the gateway to adventurous, picturesque Fraser Island. Just a 3 hour drive from Brisbane, (see below for transport options) this one is a destination not-too-be-missed.
How To Spend 3 days In Rainbow Beach
Rainbow Beach is part of Great Sandy National Park, which is about 2 hours north of Brisbane. We drove through the town, which consists of a few blocks of tourist shops and cafes, and bypassed the beach to first do the Cooloola Great Walk which leads to Carlo Sand Blow. The evil spirited boomerang attacked the brave rainbow and they collided in a loud roar and clap of thunder, killing the boomerang and shattering the rainbow into thousands of tiny pieces. As the rainbow's coloured pieces landed on the beach the sand dunes began to transform into the beautiful coloured sands they are today.

A black dune of ilmenite sands, overgrown by dune vegetation, can be found north west of the main town. This is currently being removed for sale in China with complete removal expected to take two years. The Cooloola Section of the Great Sandy National Park borders the town to the south.
