The Volkswagen Type 3 is Volkswagen's popular answer to the perceived gap in the family car market. Manufactured from '61 to '73, it came in three variations -Notchback, Squareback and Fastback. The Type Three was sold alongside the Type 1 Beetle, Type 14 Karmann Ghia and the Type 2 Bus, and featured the same rear-mounted air-cooled.

VW Type 3. The Type 3, which supplemented the range from 1961 to 1973, was available as a two-door notchback and fastback sedan and as an estate car. Key DNA features of the Type 3 included the central tube platform frame, the torsion bar suspension and the air-cooled rear engine, which initially developed 45 PS, and were taken from the Beetle.

The Type 3, also marketed as the Volkswagen 1500 and later as the Volkswagen 1600, came in three body styles: two-door Notchback, Fastback and Squareback, the latter marketed as the 'Variant' in most markets, and 'Squareback.
