Cattleya cernua (Sophronitis cernua) has much smaller flowers but produces more per growth, is very vigorous, and tolerates warmer summer temperatures. There are yellow-flowered versions of both C. coccinea and C. cernua, but these are very hard to find and are priced accordingly.

Cattleya cernua, commonly known as the nodding sophronitis, is a species of orchid occurring from Brazil to northeastern Argentina. It was the type species of the genus Sophronitis until the genus was made synonymous with Cattleya. Twenty plants of C. cernua have received a total of 22 AOS awards.

The Nodding Sophronitis blooms on a terminal, erect, 2 to 5 cm long, 4 to 10 flowered inflorescence with nodding flowers occuring in the spring. The flowers are orange-red, about 2.5 cm in diameter, opening one by one. Tepals of elliptical shape with pointed tips, petals somewhat wider than sepals.
