It's been a rare year for birders in Eastern Ontario Ontario, Birder

Sparrows: it's all in their heads. In today's post, Rondeau Provincial Park Interpreter Shane Smits will take us through identifying just a few of the many sparrow species found in Ontario. For several reasons, whether rightfully so or not, sparrows are often overlooked when it comes to birdwatching. For starters, they tend to be plentiful.

At a quick glance, Sparrows appear as a brown flash, but subtle differences are key to proper identification. In particular, pay attention to crown colour, beak colour, throat and chest colour, wing bars and breast markings. Many Sparrows at this time of year are still displaying juvenile plumage making identification even more confusing.

American Robins, Song Sparrows and Red-winged Blackbirds are more common birds in summer in Ontario and Dark-eyed Juncos and Downy Woodpeckers are more common in winter in Ontario. More information about this can be found at the end of the article.

1. Black-capped Chickadee The Black-capped Chickadee has a small body and a large round head. These birds of Ontario will happily eat from common backyard birds feeders and inspect everything, including you! Their beaks and heads are black, their faces are white, and their backs, white wing bar, wings, and tail are grey.

Henslow's sparrow ( A. henslowii ), of weedy fields of southern Ontario, gives one of the poorest vocal efforts of any bird, a hiccoughing "tsi-lick." In Ontario, the Henslow's Sparrow lives in open fields with tall grasses, flowering plants, and a few scattered shrubs. It was once fairly common in scattered areas of suitable habitat south of the Canadian Shield. However, steep declines since the 1960s have all but wiped this bird out as a breeding species in Ontario.

They are English sparrows (not related to North American sparrows but rather to African weavers) and were introduced 1850-52 from Europe to Brooklyn, NY, to control insect pests.
