I first noticed this after I used the Geforce Experience auto optimization out of curiosity. I usually tweak my own options, but I just wanted to see how it worked. It set the default "soft shadows" option to Nvidia PCSS. All of my shadows instantly looked disgusting. Nvidia claims this makes the scene "more realistic" by "introducing shadows.

Tip: AMD CHS seems to work perfectly on GeForce cards. [with comparison] I just tried that option on my GTX 970 to see how much the FPS hit is, or if I even get it to work. And it worked!
