The church was built by King Frederik V and named in his honor, though the original name was The Church of Our Saviour. Construction on the church began in 1749, and it was not completed until 1894.

The Marble Church is open to the public daily from 10 to 17 hours, on Friday and Sunday from 12 to 17 hours. On Sundays and public holidays, services are held in the church at 10:30.
