This is confirmed by Asgore's house on the Genocide route, examining the calendar, which on other routes states it's "A calendar from 201X, a data is circled," instead states "The day I fell is circled," and by that stage Chara is totally in control.

The monsters were sealed underground by humans' wizards wielding magic, swords and spears. They face someone who is presumably the monster king, and he looks suspiciously.
