The history of the Quebec Winter Carnival dates to 1893 when a group of businessmen, led by former Québec premier Joly de Lotbinière, decided to try and brighten up the long, harsh winters with a carnival. The streets were lined with ice sculptures, an ice palace was carved before the parliament building and canoe races took place across the frozen St. Lawrence river.
