NR 8844 3092. The 'King's Cave' is the largest of a group of caves in the W-facing sandstone cliff immediately above the rocky shore of Kilbrannan Sound. It is situated at the foot of the W slope of Torr Righ Mor ('big hillock of the king') and 1.6km N of the hill-fort of Drumadoon. The E slope of Torr Righ Mor contains a number of hut-circles.

A great walk to the cave about 1.5 km on a steady uphill footpath through a forest to then a narrow steep decline to a pebble beach to caves which allegedly Robert The Bruce hid in and saw the spider. The walk starts from a signed forestry car park 3km north of Blackwaterfoot. Begin by heading along the path from the right hand corner, past the sign. It passes the site of a hut circle and then soon emerges from the trees to run along the northern boundary of the forest, rewarded with views of the Pirnmill Hills, and across the Kilbrannan.

The historic King's Cave is one of the several locations in which Robert the Bruce was said to have had his famous encounter with a spider, which (so legend has it) encouraged him to carry on his fight for Scotland. It can be reached from Blackwaterfoot where you can walk along the beach and through the boulder-field path. This is part of Arran.

Begin by heading along a winding path from the left hand corner, past the sign. This walk is a loop and can be completed either a clockwise or anticlockwise the choice is yours. We prefer clockwise. The path starts in the forest on a clear gravel path continue along this path until you get to a gate. After the gate the path starts to descend.

King's Cave (Scottish Gaelic: Uamh an Rìgh) is the largest of a series of seafront caves north of Blackwaterfoot on the Isle of Arran in Scotland. The caves were formed around 10,000 to 6,000 years ago during an ice age when the weight of an advancing glacier forced the land downward, so the sea was higher relative to the location of the cave.
