The motif of the phoenix (defined above courtesy of Oxford Languages) is inspired by the Community College of Allegheny County's student publication, the Phoenix Literary Arts Journal, that — from Fall 2022 to Spring 2023 — I helped resurrect from a near-20-year-long hiatus.

Sylvia Townsend Warner's "The Phoenix" tells the story of a greedy carnival showman, Mr. Tancred Poldero, who acquires a phoenix. Seeking to maximize his profits from the bird, Poldero attempts to exploit the fact that when a phoenix dies, it bursts into flames and is then reborn in the fire, turning this death and rebirth into a show.

But the nicest part of his aviary is empty; it's reserved for a phoenix . Warner gives the reader a sense of the phoenix's novelty before it is even introduced.

Speaker or Narrator, and Point of View The poem begins with an unnamed speaker calling a number of birds to a ceremony for the Phoenix and the Turtle. In stanza 6, the reader is told "the anthem doth commence." At this point, the speaker is either the "bird of loudest lay" or else the entire chorus of birds: the eagle, swan, and crow.
